Is This A Fresco Or A Wall Painting?

Hi all,

Would this be a fresco or a wall painting?

Sell Art Online

Wiki describes a fresco as
"Fresco is a technique of mural painting executed upon freshly laid lime plaster. Water is used as the vehicle for the dry-powder pigment to merge with the plaster, and with the setting of the plaster, the painting becomes an integral part of the wall."

It's a painting on a wall, that's all I know...
Thanks!

I don't believe fresco painting was done in the orient.

yes, there is a tradition of frescoes in Asia as well.

I think it's a more ancient thing though and I'm not sure just how old this is. When I look closer at the faces it seems as if the paint is 'warped' which I don't think it would/should do if it were a fresco and not a regular painting.

If the paint is peeling
then it is not fresco.

Fresco crumbles
as the lime plaster
crumbles.

I have seen Cimabue's
fine frescoes in Assissi.

I cannot believe
that they were all
reconstituted from
the floor of the church
post-earthquake!!!

This was only possible
as the paint did not
flake off.

Thanks Jack. I was thrown off by the waterpaint appearance of the robe, but at closer inspection I do see paint peeling there as well. I'll just go with mural or wall paining :)

I would love to see those frescoes in Assissi. Thank goodness they were able to save them!

The wall isn't peeling it seems to be Spalding. Hard to tell how deep without reliefs though. Don't know if a fresco soaks in or not and if you can tell by looking at the edge of the paint. For keywords I doubt it matters much.

I would use ALL those keywords and describe it as a mural... not only likely to be most accurate but also the word most likely to be searched.

Dean Harte, if paint on mortal or plaster with religious tematics then should be fresco painting, if paint on dry wall then should be wall painting ..

I think you can find more of those paintings in Elora caves in India, those are Jani, Hindi and Budist temples all at one place ..

Thanks all for your feedback. I will follow Susan's advice and just add it to the keywords.
