I have just upgraded my iPhone to the 14 pro max and was wondering how long it will be when we can start promoting cases for the iPhone 14 models?
On another note, i was out today taking some iPhone 14 Pro Max photos, i will be uploading them to my website soon.
Feel free to offer your thoughts on the new iPhone 14 series especially the Pro/Pro Max.
Take a look.

Hey, Douglas. I’m considering an upgrade to the 14 Pro (not Max) from my 12. Waiting eagerly to here about and see your results. Is the upgrade one I should REALLY do?

Hi Bill, i took some photos today using the 48mp feature and the quality of image is amazing, amazing and amazing, but the file size is huge and that’s after i edit in the Pro Camera edit suite which auto creates my .jpegs for uploading on my faa website, i’m currently working out what is the best way to resize without losing image quality, i use the image resize app and have set .jpeg to 100% quality which i thought meant i would keep 99% of the image quality, i also have the print quality set at High. The issue is the significant difference of MB, the resize goes from 50+ mb to around 10mb, that’s making me doubt the .jpeg saved at 100% quality creates a lossless image. So i’m playing around and trying comparisons, i will keep you updated.
Otherwise there is an obvious difference in image quality regardless of wether i use the 48mp or the 12, the A16, the 65% larger sensors and more are interesting additions.
I’m off to the museum of flight tomorrow so i will take some more photos, i’ll keep you informed.
Edit/Update: I can turn those large 48mp files into great looking digital art which can be uploaded on to my website easily, that’s a big plus.

Thank you, Douglas. The 65% larger sensor size has to be an important improvement.
I would be doing post-processing on my computer in PhotoShop Elements so might have better control on resizing and reducing to

I’m finding ways Bill, the image quality is a definite step up in quality. I added an update on my previous post.
The 48mp main camera feature pixel count is 6048X 8064 = 48,771,072 pixels, That’s huge Lol.

My first digital camera in 2000 was a 3mp. 48mp sounds like overkill to me. What will we do in a few years when we'll be talking Giga-Pixels (1000Mp) ?
48Mp is so far beyond what most users need that it has become marketing hype (part of the Maps wars between manufacturers). One advantage of the 48Mp is you can drastically crop the image and still have enough pixels for poster sized prints. Kind of extends the range of the lenses
Unfortunately, very high Mp sensors like this are extremely sensitive to motion blur. Excellent in camera+lens stabilization will be a very important requirement. Or making tripods a must use accessory again.
Totally happy with my 16Mp mirrorless camera! and 12Mp iPhone 13. These allow me to print up to 48" wide/tall posters on FAA. :)

Thanks for the response Lucio, I used the 48mp for the first time on Saturday and used a tripod. The file sizes are huge, in some cases over 100mb, the pixels are over 8000X6000 which allows me to sell 60”X45” inch prints although i don’t expect to sell any above 40”inches.
The image quality is amazing and definitely in my opinion an improvement, although i had to save as .jpeg at 90% so as to upload here. The iPhone14 pro max still lets you shoot at 12mp and save as .jpegs at 100% for uploading here on faa.
I added 54 (48mp) images to my Craigmillar Castle Collection, feel free to check them out.

Douglas, please forgive me if I missed it, but do you shoot RAW?
I have the iPhone 12 Pro Max and am happy with the quality of the pictures on the screen UNTIL I open them in Photoshop. They look terrible compared to DSLR files. I would be interested in upgrading to the 14 but only if the photos are on par with shots taken with a high-end DSLR and good glass.
Is there a way for you to enlarge the pixels and do a side-by-side comparison?

Kathleen, that's so weird that you asked this because I was wondering the exact same thing. I actually started a discussion about it seconds ago.
So I'm quite interested in an answer either here or maybe in my thread too.

Hi Kathleen/Peggy, i do everything through my Pro Camera App, i don’t use Apples camera.
With the 48mp feature we have to use ProRaw instead of Raw, it’ll still show in your library as a Raw file, i save the .jpeg at 90% for 48mp shots so as to reduce the huge file size, the 48mp main camera shot includes HDR.
The iPhone has bigger sensors/lenses etc which brings in more light and along with HDR thus enhancing the overall quality of the image/colors/brightness etc.
Image quality is a real step up and provides us with over 8000X6000 pixels meaning larger print sizes.
Below is a comparison which hopefully helps.
iPhone 14 Pro Max Main Camera 48mp, HDR, (minimum edit) over 8000X6000 pixels, .jpeg saved at 90% quality.
iPhone 12 Pro Max Main Camera, without HDR, 12mp (minimum edit) over 4000X3000 pixels, .jpeg saved at 100% quality.

Hi Douglas. I'm glad you are enjoying your 14 Pro. You can hardly compare the 2 photos you provided. Based on the shadows, the 14 Pro photo has the sun shining behind it and that is why the leaves are so dark and lack detail...even by applying some HDR. The 12 Pro photo has the sun shining from the top and shows the leave details much more. Much better balanced exposure. Personally, in this comparison I find the 12 Pro picture much more pleasing.

Peggy and Kathleen bring out a great point. Phone image quality! To a large degree, phone photos that are slightly out of focus or have some motion blur will display perfectly fine on a 5-6.6" screen. You'll take that awesome picture on the phone and then load it on you 24"+ inch display and find out it is not viewable or printable. It is extremely easy to ruin a shot with motion blur on a phone even with stabilization.
When I don't have my SLR and are taking snaps with my phone, for picture I think are worth keeping, I ALWAYS zoom in the image and view them at 100% to make sure "I got the shot" correctly. 12mp or 48mp on a 6.5" screen can be VERY deceiving when it comes to image quality.

Thanks Lucio, If i look at the green behind and below the iPhone 14 tree, the colors from where i took the shot are clear, the sun as you said is right behind the sycamore tree and is giving me a silhouette look, but your right, not much of a comparison.
Here is another comparison.
iPhone 12 as above.
iPhone 14 as above.

Here in the Uk we appear to have a stock shortage; as I ordered over 2 weeks ago from Apple and I'm told I must still wait another couple of weeks. I did have an earlier iPhone which I loved and I was very impressed with the quality of the images in general, although I thought that a bit more zoom would be a bonus. I therefore changed to a Samsung because of the perceived additional tele ability of the model. This turned out NOT to be the case, although I did love the quality of the extra-wide lens that it came with. When I saw that the iPhone 14 Pro was going to be carrying 45MP than I was working on the principal that on the odd occasion when I need a bit more telephoto, that cropping would be the answer. I have to admit that since the cameras in phones have improved so much, that I no longer use an SLR or DSLR since I think the benefits are far greater with the small compact size of a phone. The only exceptions would be when doing specialist subjects like Aircraft, Wildlife, Macro etc. The opportunity to shoot without creating attention when using a phone is great in public places or just the ability to have it with you at all times is fantastic for someone like me who sees wonderful images in lots of unusual places. HOPEFULLY, when the phone finally arrives I will have the answer to the majority of occasions that I come across and I hope that I will not need to change it for many years to come.

I’m looking forward to seeing highly magnified examples from the iPhone 14. If the pixels look as wonky up close as they do with the 12, there’s no point. I’d rather put that money toward good glass.

I have the opportunity to upgrade to the iPhone 14 pro. There is a pretty sweet trade-in promotion running for another week. How are you liking it so far Doug?

I am ready to upgrade to the 14 PRO (not MAX). There are three T-Mobile stores near our home - I am awaiting for them to get new phones in stock. I am ready to trade in my 12 - NOW.

I love the iPhone 14 pro max Iris, i’m still playing around with the camera, scrolling in to a photo is also a huge improvement, i had the 12 pro max which was great, but the 14pro max is definitely a step up.
I said previously that i had to save the 48mp .jpeg image quality at 90% when using the Procamera app, i can save at 99% now, this was for uploading here on FAA.
I’ll be uploading more photos soon, i’m trying to change things, improve my website, content etc.
The iPhone 14 Pro Max is well worth the upgrade, it’s like a whole new camera compared to the 12 Pro Max.

These iPhone 14 Pro Max photos are just to show you how they look and turned out after i edited them, i offer 3 different edit variations, feel free to check them out.
Cropped (36mp 6048X 6048, 79.9mb) saved .jpeg 99%.
Image 2 (48mp 8064X 6048, 115.1mb) saved .jpeg 90%
Image 3 (48mp 8064X6048, 74.6mb) saved .jpeg 99%

Bill i sent you a screen recording via messenger showing me scrolling in to a photo, thoughts welcome.
I say awesome Lol.

Douglas on all 3 photos I see blown highlights especially in the clouds. This may be a limitation in dynamic range of the small sensor Vs a full size one or you introduced this during editing them. When presented with these situations, I stop down my camera by 1/3 stop to ensure I avoid blown out areas. Then I post process the RAW photos and balance the picture out accordingly. I don't have an iPhone 14 Pro so I can't offer any suggestions on how to avoid this or recover detail from these areas.

I think the one nice thing about larger Megapixel figure is that you can crop the crap out of the photo and still end up with a nice size file for printing.
Thanks for the feedback Lucio, i think it maybe the edit, i reverted the statue back to a DNG (Raw) file and can see what you are saying.
I agree Jason, over 8000X 6000 pixels giving a print size of 60”X 45” inches is a step up in print size and as you say, cropping that to say an iPhone 12 Pro Max pixel count of 4032X3024 allows us to crop the larger MP files with more freedom.
Here’s another one, main camera 24mm, 48mp, 8064X 6048, 105.mb, iso 80, f1.78.

I am the proud owner of the iPhone pro 14 now. After tinkering with it for a day, I am ok with the quality I get from the normal lenses. However, the macro is pretty much useless. Apple recommends using the 0.5 and not the 1-3X options. To boot you really can't use it in raw for macro, because, the noise makes the file unusable. In the other setting, some digital software fixes the flaws somewhat. Don't get the 14 pros if you want to get great macro images. The next test will be at night.

Hi Iris, great to see you have upgraded. With iPhone Macro practice makes perfect and knowing the right conditions and techniques will help you.
Worth a read.

I’ve decided to take a pass on the 14 Plus Max because, once again, they refuse to add a SD slot. Storage fills up fast. 256 GB is nothing for people like us who are constantly taking photos. Apple then wants to force us to pay a monthly fee for their cloud storage.
I have unlimited free storage of stills on Amazon because I have Prime, but there’s very limited space allowed to store videos there. It would be so easy to simply transfer everything to micro SDs like I do with my Android.
If Apple would add a SD slot, I’d buy their latest and greatest phone.

I download my files and do not use the cloud and then erase the files on my phone. I read the Samsung makes a great phone as well. This could possibly be my last apple devise. The only reason I did go this route because of this great promotion and trade in value.

Macro is all about lighting and a very steady hand Iris, i have a tripod for that, although i don’t use the ultra wide for insects, flower heads etc. I preferred using with the 12pro max the 2.5 lens, that was all about distance, using the X3 lens i will use the tripod for those. The 14 Pro Max does have an excellent scroll in feature, play around with the X3 and then scroll in, i think you will get better results on the insects and flower heads etc.

Top tip if using Airdrop to transfer photos, if you go to your Photos app in settings on your phone, look for Transfer to Mac or PC at the bottom of the page, tap on Keep Originals. This means you will not lose any image quality or metadata.
It’s all explained in this article.

Kathleen, on your phone is an airdrop feature and your computer has that as well. As long as you accept the airdrop to your computer the files transport quite fast to your computer this way. In your photo library you have the icon below to the left. click that and you will see the airdrop icon. On my phone it is also on the vey left. Click that and it will find your computer and than you have to accept on your computer end. Super easy.
