Out Of Focus

Hello everyone. I just have a question that I would like to pose. I recently returned from a trip to the Oregon coast where, even though I was in the rain, I managed to get some shots of the turbulent seas crashing into some rocks. When reviewing a good number of the photos, I noticed that the water in the foreground was out of focus. Do you think it would be ok to sell these kinds of shots? I always feel like I want to sell an image that is sharp from front to back but maybe in this case it wouldn't be an issue no matter how large the print would be. Thoughts?

Hi Mark, please take a look at the image link attached.

I sometimes make things in front of an object that I'm focusing on, blurred deliberately. It is achieved with the setting within the camera that makes the image look artistic and interesting. Blur can be fun to play with.

Thank you so much for the example as I do like what you have done there. I am sure it can be done well I just usually never think about it. Once I get one of the photos edited I will post.

Dof is definitely a good tool to use in photography. Depending on your lens or what you are focusing on with a non macro lens. I do mostly macro work with a macro lens and dof or blur/ out of focus is vital to direct you to the main subject. Lowering your f stop number with a macro lens achieves soft blur. Landscape photography benefits with the same technique used while focusing on the main interest. Main interest or focus must be sharp.

Dof is a good thing but remember not to have a distracting or unpleasant background.

Yes, enjoy using it. You have a great gallery.

Depends on the shot. If its just the waves then it might look odd. If the focus is a lighthouse then it doesn't matter. If the lighthouse is totally out of focus and that is the main subject that would be bad. If there is a water drop on the lens that's bad.

What makes a print not sell is usually noise, compression issues, and enlarging from a small image. Bokeh usually isn't one of them unless somehow the entire thing is bokeh.

Art is whatever you can get away with.

Try to process the raw file which sometimes retains more details than the jpg file, then use clarity, detail or sharpness tools of a graphic software. Good luck!

If all these fail, you can crop off the foreground to see whether you can still see a decent landscape!

You are so welcome, Mark.

If you have focused on the rocks and some of the water is blurred it will probably be fine.

It’s very difficult to comment unless you actually upload an example for us to look at.

@Joy, thank you so much for the compliment I am glad that you like my gallery.

@Mike, it is just the waves in the very front of the shot as the rest of the image is in focus.

@Gill, of course. I have posted an example.

In my opinion, I wouldn't offer it.

Everything is blurry due to a combination of out of focus and motion blur except the cliff, but there's not enough detail in the cliff to make it interesting as a subject.

Looks like your autofocus locked on to the cliff instead of the waves.

Technically speaking it would probably print. Selling wise, well the best I can say is that it doesn't stand up against the other work you have up. I think the shutter would be better if it was faster, with a bit more depth of field with the sun pointed at the hill.

@David, thanks for the advice. I probably won't offer it then. I didn't have the best shooting conditions so I tried to make due with what I had. This photo is also unprocessed but I just wanted everyone's opinion on it.

@Mike, I probably won't offer it then for sure. I have some other examples from that trip that I think might be better but I appreciate your feedback.
